A hafla is a Middle Eastern dance party. Banat el Kamar sponsors monthly haflas between November and April.
The dancers may be students, professionals, or anyone in between. There are soloists and group performances. Dancers from the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota belly dance communities join us, all dancers and all styles are welcome.
If you want to watch, just show up. It is free, but we do pass the hat to pay the rent.
Some seating is on the floor, so bring a cushion or folding chair if you like.
If you want to perform, let us know at least a day before the hafla. We want to be sure there is time for all the performers. We suggest that performances be about 5-6 minutes long. Let us know if you want to dance.
We usually have time for drumming and social dancing after the performances.
Haflas are on the first Saturday of the month, from 7 pm to 9 pm at Lake Harriet Dance Center.

BELLY is a feature length documentary by Cecilia and Chad Rinn of Full Tilt Boogie L.L.C. that is an intimate exploration of belly-dancers living America today. BELLY was shot on mini DV and produced with funds raised only from Cecilia’s belly-dance performances and belly-dance costume making. Cecilia took class, performed in shows, dressed and lodged with many of the subjects in the documentary while filming BELLY, in order to create an intimate and honest story of these dancers.
BELLY explores the multi faceted lives of these women; mothers, spouses, professionals, and community members, and the effect that belly dancing has had on their hopes, dreams, and expectations as lived through their dance.
Featured dancers:
- Samira Il Naia
- Jamela and Calypso
- Amy Sigil and Shelli Decant
- Delilah and Mahisha
After the screening, we will have an informal hafla with social dancing and drumming, plus shopping! (VENDORS - let me know if you would like to sell your wares at the event!)
Tickets are $10 in advance (and for TC Tribal members), $15 at the door. Get your tickets in advance at http://www.mszuza.info/index/Workshops.html

Minneapolis, MN

Presented by Cassandra & the Jawaahir Dance Company

Join Cassandra, Jawaahir, and guest artists in an evening of Middle Eastern dance solos and pieces from Raqs Nouveau and the dance company's diverse repertoire. Arabic musicians Tim O'Keefe and Larua Harada will be performing another amazing duet, and Twin Cities premier lighting designer Jeff Bartlett returns to add his lighting magic to this show.
Jawaahir's traditional dances bring to life the indigenous rhythms, distinctive costumes, and expressive dance traditions of Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia, and the Saudi Gulf. Their contemporary pieces are an exciting fusion of East meets West and Cassandra's theatrical flair! Sometimes serious and sometimes campy, Jawaahir's contemporary pieces expand traditional perceptions of Middle Eastern dance.
This show is expected to sell out. Tickets may be purchased online through PayPal or by credit card, by credit card by calling 612-872-6050, or by mailing a check payable to: The Cassandra School to 1940 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55403.
